Cards Down Eagles 1-0
CUA hangs onto early lead to get the victory
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University field hockey team improved to 3-5 on the season Tuesday evening with a 1-0 victory over the Mary Washington Eagles (5-5) at Cardinal Stadium. An early goal proved to be the key as the Cardinal defense held on to blank the Eagles and give keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) her second shutout of the season.
The lone goal of the game was scored early on as freshman Tory Gagliardi (Pilesgrove, N.J./Archmere) took a pass from Caroline Reilly (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) and managed to slide the ball past keeper Erin Arnwine to find the back of the cage. This put CUA up 1-0 which would be the final as the defense locked down for the remainder of the game.
The evenly-matched teams went back and forth as time continued but solid defense on both sides stopped any advances. The Cardinals had a number of opportunities and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners but couldn't connect. The Eagles, on the other hand, outshot CUA 9-7 with seven shots coming in the second half but were unable to get it past Cassilly. Both keepers ended with four saves in the contest.
The Cardinals will travel to #15 Juniata on Saturday for a contest against the Eagles who are currently on a seven-game win streak.
