Field Hockey Remains Undefeated in Landmark Play

November 1, 2008

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - CUA field hockey remained undefeated in conference play today, as the Cardinals picked up a 2-1 win over the Crusaders of Susquehanna University.

Playing for the Landmark Conference regular-season championship, both teams entered the game with perfect conference records of 5-0. In a very back-and-forth game, Catholic kept their untarnished record, while Susquehanna dropped to the No. 2 seed. Both will host playoff games on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

In the 15th minute of play, Catholic scored the first goal of the day on a penalty corner.  Sophomore midfielder/back Andrea Baick (Gaithersburg, Md./Qunice Orchard) dodged multiple defenders before scoring on an inserted ball from senior midfielder/back Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart).

Susquehanna responded at 23 minutes, 28 seconds when freshman back Laurel Monaghan handed the ball off to sophomore back Julia Amendola on a penalty-corner play to knot the game at one apiece.

Sophomore forward Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius) collected a loose ball off the pads of freshman goalkeeper Erin Ferguson to score the game-winning-goal at 44:33.

The Cardinals held a 20-11 advantage in shots and edged the Crusaders, 12-9, in penalty corners.

CUA will return to action Wednesday as the Cardinals will welcome Scranton to Cardinal Stadium for the 2008 Landmark Semifinals.
