Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime Heartbreaker, 2-1
November 8, 2008
WASHINGTON-Despite out shooting their opponents 11-3 and carrying a 17-5 penalty corner advantage, the Cardinals of CUA (#1) fell 2-1 in double overtime in the Landmark Conference championship game Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.
Carley Walko notched the lone CUA goal in the 11th minute when Kendall Petshauer's shot deflected off the goalie's pad, and right to Walko's stick. Walko pounded the ball into the open net to give the Cardinals their only lead of the game.
Abby Funk, the Juniata goal keeper, was helped by a goal in the 34th minute from Paula Price. Seizing the momentum, Funk made save after save in the second half, which saw the Cardinals unleash a fury of eight shots.
At the end of regulation the score was knotted 1-1. Neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime period, but managed several chances. Great defense by both teams kept the game in check and forced a second overtime.
In the 95th minute Paula Price beat the defense and pounded a shot past Marian Cassilly to secure the Landmark Championship trophy for Juniata (#3). The teams will now await the NCAA announcement for the 2008 field hockey national championship tournament field.
