Cardinals Shut Out Marlins
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America's field hockey team added another win to its record in a non-conference game against Virginia Wesleyan College Monday afternoon. The squad dominated the Marlins from the opening minutes, defeating their opponent by an impressive score of 6-0.
Toward the tail end of the first half, the Cardinals began a tenacious offensive attack that would leave the Marlins stunned. Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart), assisted by Caroline Reilly (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy), tallied the Cards' first goal of the afternoon. Less than two minutes later, Dixon had her hand in another CUA scoring play, with an assist to teammate Tory Gagliardiv (Pilesgrove, N.J./Archmere). Kelly Carioto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) put an exclamation point on the half by scoring off a pass from Reilly in the final penalty corner play. The team went into halftime with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
But that was not the end of the Cardinals' incredible offensive run. Freshman forward Abby Banholzer (Hartland, Wis./Trinity Academy) would convert a pass from Kelly Burke (Glendora, N.J./Bishop Eustace) into a goal to further increase the team's lead. Rebecca Kelly (Vincentown, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and Meredith Reape (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) would round out the afternoon's scoring, as the team danced their way to a 6-0 victory.
In goal for the Cardinals was sophomore Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding). Cassilly earned her first shut out of the year, recording six saves in the contest.
CUA will return to the field on Tuesday, September 9th for a 4:30 p.m., match up at Gettysburg College.
