Cardinals Breeze by Green Terror in Home Opener
WASHINGTON- The CUA field hockey team soundly defeated McDaniel College on their home turf Saturday afternoon.
CUA wasted no time in taking an offensive advantage, scoring all three of their goals in the first period. Carley Walko (Freehold, N.J./ Red Bank Catholic) recorded the first goal of the afternoon just three minutes into the game. Minutes later, freshman Abby Banholzer (Hartland, Wis./ Trinity Academy) converted a pass from Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./ St. Ignatius) to put the Cards up 2-0. Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart), assisted by Walko, rounded out the teams' scoring with a goal at the 18 minute mark.
Although the remainder of the game was quiet on the offensive end, the Cardinals used the next 35 minutes to demonstrate their stifling defensive pressure. CUA was able to hold the Green Terror to just one shot attempt in the second half. Goaltender Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded three saves in the contest, allowing only a McDaniel penalty stroke to find the back of the cage.
The young team dominated their opponent in shot attempts (20-5), assists (2-0), and penalty corners (14-3). CUA will look to continue their winning ways in a home match up against Virginia Wesleyan on Monday. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m., at Cardinal Stadium.
