Field Hockey Picked to Repeat by Landmark Coaches and SIDs

WASHINGTON-  The 2009 CUA field hockey team has been chosen by the Landmark Conference coaches and sports information directors to repeat as conference champions as the clear favorite on the ballot finishing 19 points ahead of the second-place team with 64 points.

The team finished the 2008 season with a 14-8 record, and a perfect 6-0 in the conference.  Led by senior Ro Dixon, the 2008 squad outscored opponents 53-23 and outshot them 12.2 to 8.1 per game.

Gone is Dixon, a 2008 all-conference, all-region and all-American, but a solid crew of players who also received accolades returns. They include senior goalkeeper Marian Cassilly, a two-time all region pick; junior midfielder Andrea Baick, a two-time first team all-Landmark honoree, senior midfielder Carley Walko, a second team all-Landmark choice and sophomore forward Tracey Scanlon, a first team selection last season. They anchor a team of 18 returners and at least seven promising new players.

Just three points separated the second, third and fourth-place teams in the voting. Juniata College finished with 45 points to place second, one ahead of third-place Drew University and two points ahead of Susquehanna University. The final spots went to the University of Scranton which finished with 27 points, Moravian College with 19 points and Goucher College with 10 points.

The 2009 CUA field hockey squad opens play at 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 on the road at McDaniel.  The 2009 home opener will take place the following day, Sunday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. against Randolph-Macon.
