Field Hockey Blanks Scranton, 2-0
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University field hockey team earned a decisive 2-0 victory over the Royals of Scranton University in Saturday afternoon's Landmark Conference match-up. With the win, CUA improves to 8-3 overall, while Scranton drops to 6-8.
CUA dominated in both shots and corners, out-shooting the Royals 18-1 and earning 17 more corners. The squad was quiet throughout the first half, but finally hit their offensive stride in the second stanza. Sophomore Liz McCormick (Broomhall, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) connected with teammate Tracey Scanlon (North Wales, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) who blasted the ball past Royal goalie Deirdre Rocklein.
The Cardinals turned up the heat defensively, allowing only one shot the entire game. Midway through the period, sophomore Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) capitalized off a scuffle in front of the goal, giving CUA the 2-0 advantage. The team never looked back.
"It was a great Senior Day," remarked head coach Gia Gillizza. "We played hard and our passing game was superb."
CUA now sits in second place in the Landmark Conference with a 3-1 record. They will look to continue thier winning ways on October 21st, as they travel to Rowan for a non-conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
