Field Hockey Squeaks Past Goucher, 1-0 in Overtime
WASHINGTON-- CUA field hockey (7-2, 2-0 LC) defeated Goucher College (4-8, 0-3 LC) in overtime as Kendall Petschauer scored the games only goal in the 75th minute, Wednesday.
The Cardinals dominated nearly every aspect of the game throughout the contest, but finding the back of the net proved difficult. CUA outshot the Gophers 25-2 including blanking the visitors for the entire regulation time. It wasn't until overtime that Marian Cassilly was tested on two shots, where she made one save while the other was blocked in front of the net.
Micki Manheimer, the Goucher keeper, was tested throughout the game facing the barrage of offense that unleashed 12 shots in the first half, and another 11 in the second. Meredith Chandler and Tracey Scanlon led CUA with six shots each while Carley Walko and Mary Swarthout each added three.
Unlike most of the game, much of the overtime period was played in the Cardinal defensive half of the field until Tracey Scanlon took a ball from deep in the zone to the front of the Gophers net and drew a penalty corner call. CUA had 23 previous penalty corners but failed to convert. On the 24th attempt CUA found the answer as Walko found a cutting Kendall Petschauer, who took only one shot in the contest, in front of the net. Petschauer placed the ball in the lower right corner to seal the victory for the Cardinals.
CUA will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. as the Cardinals will travel to Juniata to continue their Landmark Conference schedule.
