WASHINGTON- Field hockey junior Liz Grumbein (Allentown,
Pa./William Allen) has been named to the 2009 Longstreth/ NFHCA
Division III All-South Atlantic Region Second Team for her
phenomenal play this season.
A defender for the Cards, Grumbein started all 19 games and was
central to the Cardinals leading the league in defensive
categories. The Cards were #1 in goals against average (1.19),
total goals allowed (24) and goals allowed per game (1.24). The
defense also posted five shutouts. Grumbein, at center back, was
integral in marking key opponents’ go-to attackers, breaking
up plays, preventing shots and starting the counterattack.
Nationally the team was ranked #17 in goals against average, tied
at #38 in shutouts, tied at #38 in winning percentage and #43 in
scoring margin. Grumbein received 1st team All Landmark honors this
season with one assist and one defensive save on the year.
This season, the Cardinals finished with an overall record of 12-7, including a 5-1 record in conference play. They also made it to the Mid Atlantic ECAC semi-final contest before falling to Montclair State 2-0. This was the team's fifth straight appearance in the ECAC post-season tournament.
