Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker to #13 Gettysburg
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America field hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback to #13 ranked Gettysburg College Tuesday evening in overtime. With the loss, CUA drops to 3-1 on the year.
The Cardinals came out of the gates bursting with offensive fire, out-shooting their opponent 6-3 in the first twenty minutes of play. CUA scored their first and only goal of the match off a feed from Tracey Scanlon (North Wales, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) to Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius) midway through the half.
CUA then turned up their defensive pressure, holding the nationally-ranked Bullets scoreless until the 54th minute. Gettysburg then converted off a pass from Sarah Cole to Lexie Hearne, sending the teams into the overtime period locked at 1-1.
Catholic University's Scanlon fired a shot off in the first 15 seconds of the overtime stanza, but her shot was deflected by goalie Christina Anderson. It took GC just four and a half minutes to break the tie, as the Bullets ran away with the 2-1 victory.
Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished the night with five saves in goal. Fellow defender Brynn Becker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) also added a defensive save for the Cardinals.
The squad will return to Cardinal Stadium on Saturday, September 19th to host non-conference foe Washington & Lee. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
