Alex Caritis and Steph Mansey scored for Washington and Lee to give the Generals a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute, but a Liz McCormick penalty stroke got the Cardinals within one.
It wasn't until the final moments of the game that CUA found the back of the net again to send the game to overtime. The Cardinals earned a penalty corner with about 15 seconds remaining. As the time clicked down into the single digits Carley Walko found Emma Dixon for the equalizer.
The first overtime period was high stress for both teams as the squads exchanged fast breaks and one-on-one opportunities, but neither could find the back of the net. It wasn't until the 81st minute as Caroline Reilly found Carley Walko that the Cardinals beat Caroline Habliston and secured the victory.
CUA outshot the visitors 22-12 and earned 10 more penalty corners.
The Cardinals return to action on Sept. 23 as Mary Washington will travel to Cardinal Stadium for a 4:30 p.m. matchup. CUA will then open the Landmark Conference season on Sept. 27 against Susquehanna at 1 p.m. at home.
