Morris OT Goal Propels Field Hockey
WASHINGTON- Freshman midfielder Kathryn Morris' (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) penalty stroke gave the CUA field hockey team a 2-1 edge in the overtime period of Wednesday afternoon's contest with the University of Mary Washington. With the win, the squad improves to an impressive 5-1 on the year.
CUA outshot the Eagles 12-8 in the non-conference match-up. Freshman defender Brynn Becker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) earned one defensive save, while teammate Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) earned four saves in goal.
Neither team was able to convert in the first half despite a total of seven penalty corners. Mary Washington's Jackie Tait finally converted a penalty corner off a feed from Morgan Jones.
The Cardinals remained relatively quiet until the 59 minute mark, when Emily Dinsmore (Owings, Md./Northern) connected with Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius) to bring the score to a 1-1 standstill. The goal sent the two squads into overtime, where Morris recorded her first collegiate goal off a penalty stroke in the 79th minute.
CUA will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, as they host conference rival Susquehanna University at 1 p.m.
