Hail to England, literally! The day started off at 7:30 a.m., with a delicious home cooked breakfast. We quickly loaded the bus and were off to the Liverpool Academy to start our first training session for the week. If you heard any rumors, they are true; they do drive on the other side of the road. Our first session was run by our trainers Mike and Mike. Luckily, we were able to practice indoors for two hours due to the heavy downfall of hail and strong winds. It started with fast footwork and switched over to practicing new moves. After mastering some of the skills used by professionals, we used these moves in 1 v. 1 matches. We added goals into the mix which brought up the intensity level - team ST came out on top! We ended with round robin small field scrimmages.
After session one, we found our way back to Southport for some grub. We felt right at home eating American burgers and french fries. Immediately after lunch we found our way to our beds for some serious nap time. We woke up just in time to get dressed and ready for our first MATCH! We were a little anxious not knowing what to expect from these British athletes. John Moore University came out strong but we came out stronger. Diana Spadaro started off on the right foot with a beautiful goal (which she actually scored with her left), they answered back with a goal of their own before the half. As another hail/snow squall hammered down and the ref insisted on continuing to play, we knew we weren't in the states anymore - this is "football" country. They were the first to strike in the second half, and it was looking a little dim with just two minutes to go. Thankfully, our 2007 captain Diana Napolitano was able to tie it up with a beautiful shot from outside the box! The game ended in a 2-2 draw. Feeling in our toes is still questionable. We were able to give the other team our CUA flags and they tried to talk us into trading our jerseys. After a group picture we headed on the bus on our way home to a long waited dinner, and another chess match between Jackie and Nap (Jackie was the big winner tonight).
