Banzhaf, Smith Named Players of the Week
WASHINGTON- Sophomore basketball team member Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and track member Andrew Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton) were named Landmark Conference Players of the week for their efforts in last week's athletic competitions.
Banzhaf helped lead the Cardinals to a crucial conference victory against Drew University at home, and put forth a strong effort against USMMA in a tough loss this past Friday. The sophomore averaged 27.5 points these two contests to go along with 6 rebounds per game. He shot an impressive 84% from the foul line, attempting a combined 28 free throws this weekend. Banzhaf leads the Cardinals as well as the Landmark Conference in scoring, and also sits second in the league in rebounds averaging close to 7.5 per game. The three-time conference player of the week is shooting a remarkable 60% from the field on the season and shot 66% this past week in Landmark play. Banzhaf will look to lead the Cardinals on Saturday, February 7th against a tough Juniata team at the DuFour Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Smith was honored as Player of the Week for his performances in the Lebanon Valley Invitational that took place this past weekend. The Tennessee native managed to capture first place in both the mile and the 3,000 meter run with times of 4:56.80 and 9:48.00. respectively. His remarkable performance at the Invitational helped the Cardinals earn a second place finish at the meet. The Junior was able to shave four seconds off of his mile time from last year's Indoor Championships, and continues to improve with every meet. Smith's 3,000 meter time managed to place him ninth best thus far in the season and looks to continue his success with three meets left before the indoor championships take place in late February. The Cardinals finished fourth last year at the Indoor Championships and look to build off that as they make another run at the men's title. CUA will travel Susquehanna on Saturday February 7th for a meet that is scheduled to start at 9:30 am.
