CUA Mourns the Loss of Track and Field Great Jerry McGee
McGee Coached the Cardinal Men for More Than 40 Years

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America unexpectedly lost longtime men's track and field coach Jerry McGee Wednesday evening, he was 74.  McGee coached the Cardinals for more than 40 years before retiring at the conclusion of the 2006 outdoor track and field season. He was a coach and mentor to innumerable student-athletes as well as a valued colleague to the CUA coaching staff.

"Jerry was a true legend in the track and field community. He was a tremendous teacher and coach who had a positive influence on countless students and colleagues during his career at CUA," said Director of Athletics Mike Allen.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jerry's wife, Patsy, and his family. He will be deeply missed."

McGee, a graduate of the University of Maryland, led the CUA Cardinals more than 40 seasons and brought the squad to national prominence. During his tenure he coached two national champions, both winning in middle distance events.  McGee's athletes won 38 NCAA Division I, II and III All-American certificates and numerous all-conference honors.  He was selected to coach the American track and field squad in both 1976 and 1979 when the team competed against the U.S.S.R. The United States won both meets. He is also a member of the Seton Hall Prep Hall of Fame and was selected as one of the top 100 athletes in the last 100 years in his home state of New Jersey.

McGee leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Patsy, and their three sons Timothy, Chris and Pat as well as nine grandchildren. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 18 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Kilmarnock, Va. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6 - 8 p.m., Monday at the Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock.
