Trio of Cardinals Earn POW Honors
MADISON, N.J.- Members of three different CUA athletic programs were honored as Landmark Conference Players of the Week for strong performances in last week's lacrosse, tennis, and track and field competitions.
Melissa Brashear earns her second consecutive POW title, putting together another solid string of games in CUA's 1-1 week. Brashear tallied nine saves in CUA's non-conference loss to Washington & Lee. Later that week, the senior stopped six shots and allowed just four goals in a convincing 15-4 win over Drew.
On the men's tennis side, Dan Valverde managed incredible singles wins over Division I Loyola and conference foe Scranton this week. The freshman earned the only point for CUA in a dominating fashion, beating his Loyola opponent 6-2 and 6-1. He also swept his singles Scranton adversary 6-0, 6-2 before pairing up with Mike Schinella to win at first doubles 8-2.
Kelly Carioto nabbed two first-place finishes at the Messiah Invitational last week, solidifying her place as the third CUA representative of the POW list. The sophomore earned first in both the shot put and discus with throws of 11.97m and 37.85m, respectively. She also took third in the hammer throw. All her tosses ranked among the best in the Landmark this season.
