Cardinals Wrap Up Hosting Chelsea Football Club
WASHINGTON – On Saturday, Aug. 10, the Chelsea Football Club concluded its 12-day North American tour. During their time in the United States, the London-based professional soccer team selected the Catholic University of America Department of Athletics as its home base for training and competition.
Chelsea, who competes in the England Premier League, utilized the CUA Soccer Field and the DuFour Center for pre-season training and its participation in the inaugural Guinness Champions Cup. The inaugural competition consisted of tournament style play in three separate cities:
- Chelsea v. Inter Milan on Thursday, Aug. 1 (Indianapolis, Ind.)
- Chelsea v. AC Milan on Sunday, Aug. 4 (New York, N.Y.)
- Chelsea v. Real Madrid on Wednesday, Aug. 7 (Miami, Fla.)
Following their loss to the Real Madrid, Chelsea defeated AS Roma 2-1 in a “friendly” match at DC’s RFK Stadium.
“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to host Chelsea for their training sessions here in Washington, DC,” said Vice President of Student Affairs Michael Allen. “Everyone in their organization, along with the staff from Relevant Sports, was terrific to work with throughout the process. We wish them the best of luck and hope they will visit us again in the future.”
