Heidi Lewis Joins CUA Field Hockey Coaching Staff

WASHINGTON – Catholic University of America head women’s field hockey coach Gia Cillizza welcomes Heidi (Hershberger) Lewis to the Cardinal coaching staff on Tuesday, Aug. 6.  

Lewis graduated magna cum laude from American University’s honors program with a degree in international studies in 2006. Athletically she was a four-year starter with the Eagles, earning numerous accolades including: Patriot League nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year in 2006, ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team in 2006, Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2006, and three NFHCA Academic All-American honors from 2003-06.  She continued her educational growth by obtaining her master's degree from AU in international affairs with a concentration in U.S. foreign policy in 2008. She has also served as a customer relations representative in AU's office of enrollment and as an AU enrollment manager with the marketing call center. 

In 2012, she was a volunteer coach at American, where she assisted in running practices, game analysis, scouting, and working closely with the team's goalkeeping coach, forwards and midfielders. Prior to that, Lewis served as the head coach of American's club team for five years, taking the program to the National Field Hockey League Championship Tournament in 2009 and 2010. She has worked as a head and assistant coach with Freedom Hockey Club in Maryland with all age groups including their U16 team, which was ranked No. 1 in Maryland and No. 16 nationally. Lewis has been heavily involved with U.S. Field Hockey's Futures Development Program.  During her time with the program, she coached at three site locations, served as a selector, and coached at the Regional Futures Tournament and the National Futures Championship.  Lewis also coached at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in D.C., and remains an active member of the DC Dragons club team.

Lewis will also assist in designing and implementing practice plans, scouting, recruiting, and other administrative duties, while primarily focusing on the goalkeepers. 

Lewis and her husband Bryan, reside in Kensington, Md.

CUA opens the season at home by hosting Washington College on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cardinal Stadium.
