WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Stevenson University on Thursday, Sept. 19 in Washington D.C. at the CUA Soccer Field.
The Cardinals struck first, as Alexis Garcia (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach Senior) played a ball through the Stevenson defense for Kaylre Greaves (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township). Greaves collected the pass and fired a shot past the goalie to put Catholic up 1-0 in the 18th minute.
Stevenson was quick to get back on the attack as the Mustangs had a shot denied by the goal post but Catherine Madden was able to control the rebound and find teammate Meaghan Williams in the box. Williams was able to find the back of the net at 25:33 on the clock before Lexi Halperin (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) was able to recover into position. The teams headed into halftime with a 1-1 tie.
Madden scored the go ahead goal shortly after the second half got underway, and proved to be the game-winner.
Catholic held a 5-to-3 advantage in corner kicks, while Stevenson edged the Cardinals 13-to-10 in shots for the game. Halperin picked up four saves in the loss.
The Cardinals (4-3) return to action on Sunday, Sept. 22 when they head to Christopher Newport (4-1-1) for a non-conference tilt scheduled to kickoff at 1:00p.m.
