CUA leads initial President's Cup standings
WASHINGTON – Following a fall season in which it captured
two conference championships, the Landmark Conference has announced
that CUA sits atop the initial President’s All-Sports Cup
standings. The Cardinals currently lead over second place
Scranton and third place Moravian.
CUA’s fall was filled with plenty of memorable moments, led
by the women’s cross country team capturing its first
Landmark Conference championship. The Cardinals raced their
way to the title on October 27, led by top-ten finishes from
Rebecca Radcliffe, Keely Eckberg and Laura Kinley. In
addition, Head Coach Joe Fisher and his assistants were named the
Coaching Staff of the Year.
Along with women’s cross country, field hockey also won its
conference championship, as the Cardinals took home their second
straight title. CUA went 5-1 in the conference during the
regular season and then defeated Susquehanna and Drew in the
Landmark tournament to earn its second consecutive NCAA Tournament
bid.
For the first time since joining the Landmark Conference, the CUA
volleyball team advanced to the conference championship
match. The Cardinals won 27 matches on the year, their most
since 2002, and earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament for only
the second time. This marked CUA’s fourth straight
season with at least 20 wins.
On the soccer pitch, the CUA men’s squad went 6-1 within the
conference, earning a regional ranking along the way. The
Cardinals finished the regular season with five consecutive
victories and earned their fifth straight conference tournament
bid.
The women’s soccer team bounced back from a slow start to
earn its second straight conference tournament appearance.
The Cardinals caught fire as soon as the calendar turned to
October, going six straight matches without a loss, including three
vs. conference foes.
Rounding out CUA’s fall teams was the men’s cross
country squad, which continued to show strong signs of
growth. The Cardinals, led by freshman standout Matthias
Arauco-Shapiro, posted their best finish at the conference
championship since 2008. Arauco-Shapiro earned First Team
All-Conference honors and was named the Rookie of the Year for his
sixth place finish.
Overall, CUA’s fall teams posted a mark of 58-33-3,
including 18-5-2 vs. Landmark Conference opponents.
