CUA set to compete at conference championship on Saturday
WASHINGTON – The winter championship season continues this
weekend when the CUA track and field teams head to Selinsgrove, Pa.
for the 2012 Landmark Conference indoor championship. Action
gets underway beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25.
CUA has been competing since early December, when it traveled to
the Bow Tie Classic in Collegeville, Pa. Joe Quigley led the
CUA men with a second-place finish in the 800 meters in a time of
2:01.42, while Kelly Carioto won the shot put with a toss of 12.07
meters.
Carioto added a first place finish in the shot put in CUA’s
first meet of the second semester, which took place at Susquehanna
University on January 23.
Also at that meet, Sarah Deitz placed third in the 60 meters, and
Laura Kinley and Kristen Rayfield finished second and fifth,
respectively, in the mile. On the men’s side, Shawn
Brubaker came in third in the weight throw, with a toss of
45’ ¼”.
The Cardinals most impressive performance so far this winter took
place at the Lebanon Valley Invitational on January 28. Five
CUA student-athletes posted first place finishes, including Laura
Kinley (800 meters, mile), Courtney Doran (high jump), Carioto
(shot put), Mary Clark (weight throw) and Brubaker (weight
throw).
Kinley was rewarded for her efforts, by being named the Landmark
Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week.
Most recently, CUA was in action on February 12, when the
Cardinals traveled to Selinsgrove for their final tune up prior to
this weekend’s championship.
Carioto took home first place honors in the shot put, winning by
over three feet, while Doran won the high jump by clearing
4’11 ¾”. In men’s action, Brubaker
placed third in the weight throw.
Other athletes that competed included Clark, who finished fifth in
the shot put and sixth in the high jump, Kerri Hanley and Kaila
DeFalco, who placed 11th and 20th, respectively, in the shot put,
and Kelsely Broomfield, Deitz, Hannah Gillis and Maria Docal, who
all placed in the top-11 of the 400 meters.
Brubaker once again had a strong showing for the men, placing
third in the weight throw and 20th in the shot put.
Moravian won both the men’s and women’s Landmark
Conference titles last season, while the CUA men placed sixth and
the women came in fourth.
