CUA Athletics Weekend Preview

WASHINGTON – Welcome to CUA Athletics Weekend Preview, your source for the latest news with the Cardinals. It’ll be an exciting Saturday at CUA with men’s soccer and field hockey hosting conference championships and football having its Senior Day.  That same day, women’s soccer and volleyball head to Pennsylvania to compete in the Landmark Conference tournament, while swimming is at Susquehanna.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (12-6, 5-1 Landmark Conference)
The women’s soccer team heads to Pennsylvania on Saturday to battle Scranton in the Landmark Conference Championship.  This is the third time in four years the Cardinals have made it to the championship game.  Their last championship win was in 2009 against Susquehanna. The Cardinals beat Susquehanna 3-2 on Wednesday in the semifinals to advance to this year’s championship tilt.  The game against Scranton will begin at 1 p.m. 

FOOTBALL (5-3, 1-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference)
CUA’s final home game is this Saturday against conference rival Guilford on Senior Day.  The Cardinals lost last weekend on the road to Washington & Lee.  Quarterback Greg Cordivari completed 26 of 44 passes for 254 yards and two scores and Andrew Ouellette caught a team-high six passes for 107 yards.  The Cardinals lead the series against Guilford 8-4, including a last-minute 24-23 victory last season. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday from inside Cardinal Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL (25-8, 4-2 Landmark Conference)
The volleyball team will head to Huntingdon, Pa. to face conference foe Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference semifinals on Saturday on the campus of Juniata College.  The Cardinals swept Goucher on Wednesday at home in the quarterfinals to advance to their third consecutive semifinal.  CUA is looking for its first-ever appearance in the Landmark Conference championship, which will take place on Saturday evening at 7. The match against Susquehanna will begin at 1:30 on Saturday.   Juniata and Moravian will square off in the other semifinal.

MEN’S SOCCER (14-3-1, 6-0-1 Landmark Conference)
The number one seed Cardinals host the number three seed Merchant Marine Mariners on Saturday in the Landmark Conference championship.  CUA has won the title in each of the last two years and is going for a three-peat against the Mariners.  On Wednesday the Cardinals took down Susquehanna 3-1 in the semifinals behind Mike Brennan’s two goals.  The match against Merchant Marine will begin at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon. 

FIELD HOCKEY (15-1, 6-0 Landmark Conference)
The 10th ranked Cardinals are the number one seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament and will host Drew on Saturday as they battle for the title.  The Cardinals advanced to the championship after beating Juniata 2-1 on Wednesday in a thrilling overtime finish. The Cardinals are on an eleven-game winning streak and are led by Colleen Harwood with 13 goals.  The match against Drew will begin at 5 p.m. when CUA goes for its  first Landmark Conference title.

SWIMMING
Men’s
Women’s
The men’s and women’s swim teams will travel to Pennsylvania on Saturday to face conference foe Susquehanna.  Both Cardinal teams defeated Goucher last weekend 123-82 on the men’s side and 115-78 on the women’s side.  Julia Wisler and Caleb Capozella combined to win five events between them to lead the Cardinals to a strong victory.  The meet on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m.
