CUA heads to Pa. for Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament
WASHINGTON – After taking on Division I power Florida in an exhibition earlier this month, CUA will get its regular season underway on Friday evening when the Cardinals travel to Carlisle, Pa. to face Penn State-Harrisburg. The game will take place on the campus of Dickinson College in the 2011 Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament.
CUA enters this weekend looking to win its eighth straight season opener. The Cardinals won the Allegheny Tournament title last season after defeating Fredonia State and Allegheny to begin their 2010-11 campaign.
The Cardinals welcome back three starters from a season ago, led by juniors Chris Kearney and Shawn Holmes. Kearney is CUA's leading returning scorer (7.8), rebounder (4.9) and shot blocker (2.3), while Holmes is the leading returner in assists (3.2) and steals (1.3).
In addition to Kearney and Holmes, CUA also welcomes back a number of players that saw time last season, including Andy Roell, Nate Koenig, Darrell Carroll, Derek Puhalski, Billy Donovan, Matt Stone, Nate Lorence and Pete Schramm.
The Cardinals were the top defensive and rebounding team in the Landmark Conference in 2010-11, holding teams to 60.2 points, while outrebounding opponents by an average of eight per game.
In CUA's exhibition at Florida earlier this month, Donovan led the Cardinals with 13 points, while Koenig pulled down a team-high five boards and Holmes dished out five assists.
Penn State-Harrisburg enters this weekend with a 1-0 record following a 76-63 victory over Elizabethtown on Tuesday. Amani Glenn led the Lions with 22 points and nine rebounds, in helping lead them to their first non-conference victory since January of 2010.
Kenton Alston (15), David Reisinger (14) and Jordan Gatchell (10) joined Glenn in double figures for Penn State-Harrisburg, with Alston dishing out a team-high six helpers.
Tournament host Dickinson fell in its season opener, 69-67, to Washington and Lee on Tuesday, while Wilkes, the Red Devils opponent on Friday, cruised past Penn State-Hazleton on Tuesday, 89-51.
CUA and Penn State-Harrisburg will tip-off their game at 6 p.m. on Friday. Dickinson will then meet Wilkes in the second game, with the consolation and championship games taking place on Saturday.
