Drew, Merchant Marine Academy come to town this weekend

WASHINGTON - CUA looks to get back on the winning track this weekend with home games against Drew and Merchant Marine Academy.  The Cardinals saw their four-game winning streak come to an end last weekend, when they fell to Scranton and Moravian, but they are still very much alive for a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament.

CUA swept Drew and USMMA last month on the road and have beaten the teams a combined five straight times dating back to last season.

On Saturday, CUA will honor its senior class of Darrell Carroll and Andy Roell.  That pair has combined to score 588 points and pulled down 364 rebounds in their four years together, while leading CUA to 72 wins.

Carroll has been one of CUA's most consistent players during Landmark Conference play, averaging 11 points on 52% shooting and 5.6 rebounds.  In two games last weekend, Carroll averaged a team-leading 18 points on 57% shooting and 5.5 rebounds.

Despite its two losses last weekend, CUA continues to do a solid job of protecting the basketball.  In their last six games, the Cardinals are averaging only 7.2 turnovers with a low of three at Drew on January 21.

It's been a tough season for Drew, with only five total wins, three of which have come vs. Landmark Conference opponents.  The Rangers won their last time out, downing Susquehanna 67-56 at home.  Asmar Capers (23) and Terrell Brown (18) led the way offensively and Drew knocked down 10 3-pointers as a team.

Capers leads the team in scoring at 22.1 points per game with Brown next in line (12.6).  The Rangers are surrendering 76.2 points per game and allowing teams to shoot nearly 47% from the floor.

Merchant Marine Academy enters this weekend having won two of its last three games, including a 75-70 win over Juniata that knocked the Eagles out of first place in the Landmark Conference.  The Mariners are only 2-6 away from home, with none of those victories coming vs. conference foes.

Reed Buck leads the team in scoring at 19.8 points per game, which is over 10 points more than the next leading scorers, Zach Karczewski and Kevin Kerr (7.5).  CUA downed Merchant Marine Academy 59-55 earlier this month in Kings Point, N.Y.

Friday's game between CUA and Drew will get started at 7:30 p.m., while on Saturday, the Cardinals and USMMA tip their game off at 4.  CUA will offer live video and stats of each game.
