CUA remains unbeaten heading into holiday break
WASHINGTON – CUA is 10-0 for only the second time in school history after the Cardinals downed Gallaudet 80-65 on Saturday evening. CUA led 44-22 at halftime and then held off a second half rally by the Bison to improve to 10-0 for the first time since the 1927-28 season.
Four CUA players hit for double figures in the win, led by freshman Steve Limberiou who registered his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 boards. Shawn Holmes (14), Nate Koenig (13), and Chris Kearney (10) also scored in double figures.
Holmes and Koenig led the Cardinals in assists with four, while Kearney blocked a game-high three shots.
Back-to-back 3-pointers right from the start gave CUA an early 6-0 lead. Limberiou hit one of the two trifectas and scored 11 of the Cardinals first 16 points to give CUA a 16-5 advantage.
Darrell Carroll's jumper in the paint at the 10:48 mark pushed CUA's lead to 26-12, and Limberiou soon followed with another 3-pointer to make it a 17-point advantage.
The Cardinals offense continued to click, with Kearney splashing a jumper and Holmes sinking two free throws to open up a 37-15 lead with five minutes to play in the half.
Limberiou closed out the first half with his fifth shot from downtown with only 36 seconds remaining to send the Cardinals into halftime with a comfortable 44-22 lead.
CUA shot 50% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down 17 of 34 shots, including 6 of 14 from downtown.
After Kearney got inside for a basket at the 16:44 mark of the second half, CUA found itself ahead by 19, but Gallaudet responded by scoring seven straight to get within 12, 53-41.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jocus Houston and Layton Seeber brought the Bison to within 55-47 with 11:54 remaining, and after Tony Tatum and Seeber drilled two more trifectas, it was just a six-point CUA lead with 9:19 on the clock.
The Cardinals responded in a big way though, scoring nine straight, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Holmes and a huge three-point play by Koenig to push the lead back to double digits.
Two straight jumpers by Kearney and Holmes gave CUA a 76-61 advantage with under five minutes remaining, and the Bison never threatened again.
CUA dominated Gallaudet on the glass, outrebounding the Bison 56-22, which led to a 24-3 advantage in second chance points. The Cardinals also forced Gallaudet into 38% shooting from the floor.
The Bison received a game-high 22 points from Seeber, which included five 3-pointers, while Daniel Fava added 14 points.
The Cardinals are now off for the holidays before returning to action on December 31 for the opening round of the CUA-Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic inside the DuFour Center. The Cardinals will take on MCLA at 4 p.m. with Buffalo State and Wesleyan facing off in the other first round game at 6. The two winners will then play on January 1.
