Hot-shooting Royals down Cardinals 79-62

WASHINGTON – CUA had its hands full with Scranton (13-6, 6-2) on Friday, falling to the Royals 79-62 at home.  Five Royals scored in double figures, led by Tommy Morgan's 17 points and as a team Scranton shot 53% from the field.  CUA (15-4, 5-3) was led in scoring by Darrell Carroll, who netted 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting.

Luke Hawk's 3-pointer during the early going gave Scranton a 7-2 lead, but two Pete Schramm free throws brought the Cardinals to within three.

Another Hawk three, this one coming at the 13:33 mark, gave Scranton an eight-point lead, and after Hawk got inside for a layup two minutes later, the Royals were on top by 10.

CUA ripped off the next seven points, capped by Shawn Holmes' basket at the 9:03 mark to pull within 16-13, but Dan Hilferty sank a jumper for the Royals to extend to a five-point lead.

Tommy Morgan's layup at the 5:55 mark put Scranton in front by seven, but Carroll scored for CUA down the other end to keep the Cardinals within striking distance.

Another Carroll basket, this one coming with 3:45 on the clock, brought the Cardinals within four, but the Royals closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead into halftime.

Early in the second, Travis Farrell splashed a trifecta for the visitors to put Scranton in front by 12, but six straight points by CUA sliced the lead in half.

Billy Donovan's layup at the 13:08 mark brought the Cardinals to within four, but baskets by Hawk and Ross Danzig made it an eight-point lead for the visitors.

The lead reached 11 on Matt Swaback's 3-pointer at the 10:16 mark, and after Danzig splashed a three of his own two minutes later, CUA found itself down 15.

Schramm was fouled down the other end and made both foul shots to bring CUA within 13, but that was as close as the Cardinals got the rest of the way.

CUA shot just 34% from the floor, including a 13% showing from downtown.  The Cardinals received 10 points by Steve Limberiou, with Donovan leading the way on the glass with six rebounds.  Holmes dished out four of the Cardinals' 14 assists and also recorded four steals.

Along with Morgan, Danzig (16), Hawk (15), Swaback (11) and Farrell (10) finished in double digits for Scranton, with Hawk pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.  The Royals shot 47% in the opening half and 59% after halftime, and wound up with eight 3-pointers on the night.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, when they face Moravian at home.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
