D3Hoops.com honors three Cardinals on All-Region Team

WASHINGTON – D3Hoops.com announced its All-Region Teams on Wednesday, and three Cardinals were honored. Chris Kearney was named the Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year and a First Team selection, while Shawn Holmes earned Third Team honors. CUA Head Coach Steve Howes was named the Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year.

The Landmark Conference Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Kearney now adds another piece of hardware to his collection after earning Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year accolades.

A First Team All-Conference selection, Kearney led CUA in scoring (16.7) and rebounding (7.0) this season, while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and blocking 2 shots per game. The 6-7 senior ranks in the top 10 of five statistical categories within the Landmark, including scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocks and minutes.

Kearney, who last week was named an ECAC All-Star, scored in double figures 25 times this season, topping out with a career-high 32 points in a win over Scranton on January 19. He then dropped another 30 points at Scranton on February 9.

The third leading shot blocker in school history, Kearney was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week on two occasions this season, and was also named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week twice. Kearney posted eight double-digit rebound games, with a high of 15 at Merchant Marine on January 26. That same day, Kearney scored the 1,000th point of his career.

Holmes earns a spot on the All-Region Third Team, after joining Kearney as a First Team All-Conference selection and ECAC All-Star. The native of Baltimore averaged 16.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game this season, hitting for double-digits 25 times. Holmes' season high was a 27-point performance in a win over Randolph-Macon.

Holmes, who scored the 1,000th point of his career on December 30, handed out a career-high 11 assists in a win over Goucher, and ranked in the top 10 of six statistical categories within the Landmark.

A two-time Landmark Conference Player of the Week, Holmes hit the game-winning shot in CUA's 63-62 victory over Juniata in the Landmark Conference championship on February 23.

Leading CUA to its most wins since 2001-02, Howes collects his second Coach of the Year award, after earning the same honor from the Landmark Conference last month. Howes led CUA to 25 wins, its first Landmark Conference title and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007 this season.

His win over Staten Island in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament was the 175th of his career. Howes will enter next season with a record of 175-79, with the 175 wins ranking third in school history and his win percentage of .689 ranking second.

In nine seasons as the helm of the Cards, Howes has led CUA to three conference titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and five 20-win seasons.
