No. 12 CUA suffers first loss, falls 76-66 at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – No. 12 CUA fell to DeSales University on Wednesday evening by a score of 76-66.  The Bulldogs shot 50% on the night and scored 49 second half points to send the Cardinals to their first loss of the season.  Five Cardinals reached double figures, including Chris Kearney who finished with 10 points and 11 boards.

A three-point play by Kearney midway through the first half gave CUA a five-point advantage, but DeSales scored the next six to go in front 10-9.

A 3-pointer by Paul Pammer with 4:52 to play before the half gave the home team a 20-14 advantage, but Nate Koenig splashed a three of his own down the other end to pull the Cardinals within 20-17.

DeSales stayed hot and answered with a 7-0 run, before the Cardinals scored the final four points of the half to trail by only six at the break.

A 7-2 run out of halftime extended DeSales' lead to 11, but CUA hung tough, pulling to within six on Bryson Fonville's jumper with 12:17 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Kyle Phanord with 10:47 remaining again brought the Cards to within six, but a 9-2 Bulldogs run put CUA in a 13-point hole with 8:02 on the clock.

The lead reached as many as 15 down the stretch, as DeSales recorded its fifth win of the season.

Joining Kearney in double figures were Shawn Holmes (12), Steve Limberiou (11), Koenig (10) and Fonville (10).  Holmes handed out five assists as well, and Kearney finished with three blocks.

CUA shot only 36% from the floor, but the Cards sank 10 of 12 free throws (83%).

Pammer and Michael Guildin led DeSales in scoring with 18 points apiece, with Mike Coleman adding 15 on 6 of 10 shooting.

The Bulldogs shot 58% in the second half, including a 6 of 8 showing from beyond the arc, and they handed out 17 assists on 25 field goals.

CUA remains on the road for its next game, traveling to Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon to face Carnegie Mellon.  Start time is set for 2 p.m.
