No. 15 Cardinals race past Gallaudet 85-60

WASHINGTON – The No. 15 Cardinals returned from final exams with an 85-60 win over Gallaudet on Saturday evening.  CUA placed five players in double figures, led by Steve Limberiou with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting.  Chris Kearney added 19 points and Shawn Holmes chipped in with 13 to help the Cards improve to 7-1.

CUA it shot it well all evening, connecting on 52% for the game, including a 55% performance in the first half.  The Cardinals handed out 19 assists and won the rebound battle 33-29.

A 3-pointer by Nate Koenig gave the Cardinals a 9-2 lead less than five minutes into the game, but the Bison answered with six straight to pull within one.

CUA then responded with an 8-2 run to go back in front by seven, and after Limberiou drained a 3-pointer with exactly nine minutes to go, the lead was up to 10.

A steal by Koenig led to a Bryson Fonville basket to give CUA its largest lead up to that point at 15, and the Cards eventually took an 18-point lead into the break.

Limberiou scored the first points of the second half to give CUA a 20-point advantage, and after Koenig got inside for a layup two minutes later, the lead was up to 24.

Riley Kirsch’s basket with 11:44 on the clock made it a 28-point lead and the Cardinals were well on their way.

Fonville (11) and Koenig (10) gave CUA five double figure scorers, while Limberiou led the way on the backboards with seven.  The Cardinals were 15 of 19 at the free throw line and held a commanding 33-5 lead in points off turnovers.

Gallaudet received a team-high 20 points from Layton Seeber, as well as 15 points from Danny Kelly, but the Bison committed 27 turnovers.

The Cardinals are right back in action on Monday evening when they play host to Randolph-Macon.  Start time from inside the DuFour Center is set for 7 p.m.
