Holmes named Player of the Week after helping CUA capture title
WASHINGTON - Shawn Holmes hit the biggest shot of his career on
Saturday night, sinking a floater off the glass with three seconds
to play, to lift CUA to its first Landmark Conference title. On
Monday, Holmes was named the Landmark Conference Player of the
Week. The senior finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and two
assists in the 63-62 win over Juniata.
Holmes hit two huge 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions with
under 10 minutes to play on Saturday. The first tied the game and
the second gave CUA a one-point lead. In 29 minutes, Holmes did not
commit a turnover against the Eagles.
On Wednesday of last week, Holmes struggled with his shooting (3
of 13 from the filed), but pulled down seven rebounds, handed out
three assists and only had one turnover in 40 minutes of work in a
semifinal win vs. Merchant Marine Academy.
Holmes finished the week averaging 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and
2.5 assists, and is currently second in scoring (16.1) and assists
(3.2) for CUA this season.
The Landmark Conference champion Cardinals learned their NCAA
Tournament fate on Monday. The Cardinals will host The College of
Staten Island on Saturday, March 2. Start time will be announced
soon. CUA is making its 14th appearance in the Big Dance, and first
since 2007.
