No. 13 CUA closes out regular season Saturday on Senior Day
WASHINGTON - After clinching the top seed in next week's Landmark Conference Tournament, No. 13 CUA closes out the regular season Saturday evening against Moravian on Senior Day. The Cardinals raced past Goucher 71-43 on Wednesday to earn their school-record 11th Landmark victory of the season. Nate Koenig led four Cards in double figures with 18 points, and he added 10 rebounds for his third double-double in the last four games.
The Cardinals look to close out an unbeaten regular season inside the DuFour Center on Saturday. CUA, a perfect 11-0 at home, is holding opponents to 54.5 points on 35.2 percent shooting from the field and 28.8 percent from three.
CUA is 19-0 this season when leading at halftime. Dating back to last season, the Cardinals have won 25 consecutive games when leading at intermission.
The Cardinals lead the Landmark Conference in every statistical shooting category, including free throw percentage (73.9), field goal percentage (46.0) and 3-point percentage (39.7).
Following Bryson Fonville's career high tying 16-point effort at Goucher on Wednesday, all five CUA starters are now averaging at least 8.0 points per game. Four of those starters (Kearney, Holmes, Koenig, Limberiou) have led CUA in scoring in at least one game this season.
Senior Nate Koenig is playing the best basketball of his career. The Maryland native is in the midst of a five-game stretch in which he's averaging 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists. Koenig has scored in double figures in each game and recorded three double-doubles.
Moravian enters this weekend with a chance to lock up its second consecutive Landmark Conference Tournament berth. The Greyhounds either need to defeat CUA or have Susquehanna take down Merchant Marine Academy. Moravian fell to Scranton earlier this week, snapping a brief two-game win streak.
The Greyhounds, who are only 3-7 on the road, feature three double figure scorers in D.J. Strayhorn (15.2), Garrett Johnson (11.4) and Cameron Cullen (10.2). Moravian leads the Landmark in steals, registering 8.3 per game, with Strayhorn ranking second individually (1.9).
CUA meets Moravian for the 13th time on Saturday with the Cardinals leading the series 8-4. After being swept last season, CUA bounced back with an 85-59 victory last month in Bethlehem, Pa.
