Holmes nets 27, leads No. 15 Cardinals past Yellow Jackets

WASHINGTON – Senior captain Shawn Holmes scored a season-high 27 points on 8 of 13 shooting to help lead No. 15 CUA to a 67-55 win over Randolph-Macon on Monday evening.  The Cardinals improve to 8-1 and earn their third straight win, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-5.

Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 6-0 lead during the early going, but CUA ripped off 12 of the next 13 points to claim a 12-7 advantage with 13:20 to play before halftime.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead back, going ahead by five with 9:08 to go in the half on Joe Hassell's bucket, but CUA battled back and tied things at 23 on Bryson Fonville's basket a few minutes later.

A jumper by Nate Koenig followed by a Fonville free throw gave CUA a five-point advantage with just over two minutes remaining, and two Holmes free throws in the final minute sent the Cards into intermission with a 32-27 lead.

Back-to-back baskets by Steve Limberiou, including a 3-pointer, right out of the break pushed CUA's lead to 10, but the Yellow Jackets quickly closed to within six on Lamar Giggetts' basket with 17:32 on the clock.

Holmes' jumper with 10:52 remaining gave CUA an 11-point bulge, but Randolph-Macon continued to hang around, pulling to within six on a pair of free throws by Andre Simon.

The back-and-forth continued, with Chris Kearney's free throws pushing the lead back to 11 with 6:30 to play, only to see Randolph-Macon slice it to a seven-point game three minutes later.

With less than two minutes remaining, CUA worked the ball around until freshman Kyle Phanord drilled a short jumper from the baseline to put the Cards on top by 11 and all but seal the win.

The Cards then hit all six of their free throw attempts in the final minute to earn victory number-eight.

Holmes went a perfect 8 of 8 at the free throw line and handed out three assists to go along with his 27 points, while Limberiou netted 12 and Fonville added nine.

CUA sank 50% of its 3-pointers, recorded 11 steals and forced Randolph-Macon into 21 turnovers.

The Yellow Jackets received 16 points and 10 rebounds from Simon, while Giggetts and Hassell added 10 apiece.

CUA is now off for the holidays before returning to action on December 29 when the Cardinals host Denison in the CUA-Holiday Inn College Park Classic.  Start time is set for 4 p.m. from inside the DuFour Center.

Delaware Valley and Husson will face one another in the other opening round game with the two winners squaring off on December 30 in the championship.
