No. 11 Cardinals welcome Scranton to town on Saturday
WASHINGTON - Sitting in sole possession
of first place in the Landmark Conference, No. 11 CUA welcomes
Scranton to the DuFour Center Saturday evening. The Cardinals
shot 52 percent from the floor and raced past Susquehanna 82-65 on
Wednesday evening, with Chris Kearney and Steve Limberiou sharing
top scoring honors with 19 points apiece. That win pushed
CUA’s record to a perfect 7-0 this season at home.
Kearney led CUA in scoring on Wednesday, with 22 points on 7 of 10
shooting. The Virginia native is closing in on his 1,000th
career point, entering this weekend with 941 career tallies.
CUA is a perfect 7-0 at home this season, with the six wins coming
by an average of 22 points. The Cardinals are holding teams
to 54.3 points on 35% shooting inside the DuFour Center, while
shooting an impressive 47% from 3-point range.
All five of CUA’s starters played at least 30 minutes in the
win over Susquehanna, with Kyle Phanord the only reserve who played
at least 10 minutes. CUA’s starters are all averaging
at least 30 minutes per game, except Nate Koenig, who is playing
nearly 28 minutes.
Freshman point guard Bryson Fonville has had a terrific first
season for the Cardinals, averaging 8.0 points, 4.4 assists and 3.6
rebounds in 30.2 minutes per game. In his last four games,
Fonville’s numbers have jumped to 13.3 points and 5.8 assists
in 35.5 minutes. He has set a new career high in points twice
during this time.
Scranton, the two-time defending conference champion, opened the
season on a six-game winning streak, but a conference loss to
Merchant Marine Academy on December 9 was the first of three
straight for the Royals. Six more wins in a row followed, but
the Royals fell to Drew on Wednesday at home, snapping their win
streak.
Three Scranton players average double figures on the offensive
end, led by Ross Danzig’s 16.1 points per game. Danzig
is also the team’s top rebounder at 8.2 per game.
The Cardinals and Royals meet for the 41st time Saturday evening
with Scranton holding a 27-13 lead. CUA has dropped 10
straight to the Royals, with the last win coming on January 17,
2009 by a score of 64-59.
