No. 10 CUA seeks fifth straight win Saturday night at Merchant Marine

WASHINGTON - The No. 10 Cardinals make the long trek to New York Saturday evening to face the Mariners of Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference tilt.  CUA downed USMMA 74-57 earlier this month in Washington behind four 3-pointers and 20 points from sophomore Steve Limberiou.  In the Cards' last game, they raced past Goucher 72-46 at home to improve to a conference best 6-1.  All five starters reached double figures and CUA handed out a season-best 25 assists on 29 made field goals to lead the Cardinals to their fourth straight win.

Senior Chris Kearney is CUA's leading scorer this season, averaging 17.5 points per game.  The Virginia native is closing in on his 1,000th career point, entering this weekend needing just nine more points to reach the milestone.

In CUA's win over Goucher on Wednesday, the Cardinals placed all five starters in double figures.  It marked the fifth time this season that all five starters reached double figures (DeSales, Gallaudet, Merchant Marine Academy, Susquehanna, Goucher).

The Cardinals handed out a season-best 25 assists on 29 made field goals in Wednesday's win over Goucher.  That's a percentage of 86.2 of assisted field goals.  Leading the way was senior Shawn Holmes with a career-high 11 helpers.

Senior Nate Koenig is the ultimate glue guy for CUA, doing whatever it takes on both ends of the floor to help the Cardinals win. In his last eight games, Koenig has hit his stride offensively, averaging 10.8 points on 46 percent shooting, to go along with 6.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and an 85.7 percent showing at the free throw line.  The Maryland native has scored in double figures seven times during that span.

CUA's 6-1 record through the first half of Landmark Conference play is its best since joining the conference.  The most conference wins CUA has had in the Landmark is 10, accomplished during the 2009-10 season.

After connecting on a season-low one 3-pointer against Scranton on January 19, CUA bounced back with a 6 of 14 showing in Wednesday's win vs. Goucher.  The Cardinals have made at least five trifectas 13 times this season, and they lead the Landmark Conference at 39.5 percent from downtown.

Merchant Marine Academy snapped a two-game losing skid on Wednesday with a 75-66 win over Drew in Madison, N.J.  The Mariners received double-doubles from Nick Sergio (20 points, 16 rebounds) and Scott Dennin (11 points, 10 rebounds) and owned a 53-32 advantage on the backboards.

USMMA is 4-2 at home thus far, with the two losses coming vs. conference foes.  Reed Buck, last season's conference player of the year, leads the squad in scoring at 19.0 points per game, with five other Mariners averaging at least 4.9 points per game.  USMMA leads the entire conference in rebounding, pulling down 42.2 caroms per game.

CUA and USMMA meet for the 21st time Saturday evening, with the Cardinals leading the series 11-9.  The teams split their two meetings last season, with the road team coming out on top in both games.  CUA won the first contest this season, earning a 74-57 victory in Washington behind a defensive performance that held the Mariners to 38 percent shooting.
