Men's Basketball Predicted to Finish 3rd
WASHINGTON – The Landmark Conference coaches have voted, and the Catholic University men's basketball team has been predicted to finish 3rd this season, receiving 43 points in the preseason poll.
The ranking is identical to last year's pick, when the Cardinals exceeded their expectations and won the 2013 Landmark Championship. CUA (25-4) finished first in the regular season with a 12-2 conference record, and hosted both playoff rounds as the No. 1 seed. The Cardinals beat Juniata in dramatic fashion, as Shawn Holmes hit a floater with three seconds left to lift CUA to the program's first title since joining the Landmark Conference in 2007. They received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Staten Island 67-61 at home and advanced to the second round at Williams College.
Though the Cardinals lost a lot of experience and leadership with the graduation of All-American Chris Kearney, First Team All-Landmark Shawn Holmes, and captain Nate Koenig, they return Second Team All-Landmark selection Steve Limberiou and sophomore point guard Bryson Fonville, who ranked third in the conference with 4.2 assists per game as a rookie.
Catholic welcomes nine newcomers to the team in addition to 12 returners. Catholic will open up the season when they travel to Westminster College for the Buzz Ridl Classic on Friday, Nov. 15.
