Brian Salzillo and Mike Garrow scored 17 points each to lead Eastern Connecticut State University to a 76-70 victory over Catholic University in the AJ Buchanan Classic at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., on Friday.
Jared Prince, who missed all of last year with a shoulder injury, scored a career-high 25 points for the Cardinals (2-1). Sophomore Riley Kirsch added a personal-best 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Prince, a 6-foot-8 junior from Wilmette, Ill., hit 10 of 15 shots off the bench and all five of his free throws. Kirsch, making the first start of his career, was 7 of 13 from the field and made both of his free throws.
Steve Limberiou, averaging 24 points in CUA's first two games, struggled throughout the night and finished with nine points and eight boards. He was 4 of 16 and 1 of 5 from 3-point range.
The Warriors (3-1) led the entire game and went ahead by 11 points twice, the last time at 59-48 with 11:40 to play on a Brandon Kuczenski layup. Kuczenski was 5-for-5 and fellow reserve Brandon Yarborough succeeded on all four of his attempts. Eastern Connecticut was 31 of 60 overall, while holding the Cards' to 28 of 69. CUA was 1 of 11 on 3s.
Trachone Preston added 12 points for the Warriors. Garrow tallied nine rebounds and five assists, and Salzillo contributed six assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals.
Cardinal point guard Bryson Fonville was the only player to log the entire 40 minutes and scored 14 points and handed out three assists.
CUA will play the loser of the Medgar Evers-Manhattanville game Saturday at 1 p.m.
NOTE – The tournament is being played at Kennedy Gymnasium, which was dedicated in 1957 by the family of future President John F. Kennedy. The nation's 35th president was assassinated 50 years ago today in Dallas.
