Marietta, Ohio – The Catholic University of America men's basketball team opened play at the 45th Annual Shrine Tournament hosted by No. 11 Marietta on Friday night and rolled past La Roche, 84-65. For the second-straight game, sophomore Jay Howard led No. 6 CUA in scoring, posting 24 points.
The Cardinals came out strong, scoring 51 points in the first half at Ban Johnson Arena and shot over 50 percent from the field in the contest, going 32-of-62. The Cards were also locked in from deep, shooting 9-of-19 mark from downtown.
Howard, the Landmark Athlete of the Week, continues his early season tear and is now averaging 25.5 ppg in his first two games. He rounded out Friday night's score sheet in impressive fashion with six rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks while shooting 10-of-14 from the field.
The big man was supported by 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four 3-pointers by fellow forward Corey Stanford. Senior guard Bryson Fonville executed the offense perfectly, dishing out eight assists as CUA helped on 21 of its 32 made baskets. Fonville also chipped in 13 points and two steals.
Catholic now awaits the victor of Methodist and host Marietta tomorrow at 7 p.m. Should the No. 11 Pioneers advance, it would be an early season matchup of top-15 teams.
