Catholic Runs Past Waynesburg in Holiday Classic Opener, 71-42

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America men's basketball team hosted the opening game of the 2015 CUA Holiday Inn College Park Classic at the Dufour Center on Tuesday evening and ran past Waynesburg, 71-42.

The Cardinals' defense was on full showcase as they held their opponent to a season-low 42 points, including just 15 at the break. Catholic held Waynesburg to only 11 field goals made on 24-percent shooting from the field. The Cards also outrebounded the Jackets by 11, 47-36.

Rookies Andre Mitchell and Jimmy Golaszewski each tallied three steals for head coach Steve Howes as the Cards racked up 11 total thefts while forcing Waynesburg into 18 turnovers.

Offensively for Catholic, three players scored in double-digits. Sophomore big man Jay Howard registered a game-high 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting.  Senior point guard Bryson Fonville added 11 points and a game-high seven assists, while Mitchell filled the stat sheet with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting with five rebounds, two assists and two 3-pointers.

CUA pulled down 18 offensive rebounds in the game that helped the team to 74 attempted shots as the team knocked down 41-percent of its takes. The Cards also assisted on 17 made field goals.

Waynesburg only had one player score more than five points as Jon Knab led the Jackets with 14 points.

CUA will look to keep its momentum going in the championship game of the 2015 CUA Holiday Inn College Park Classic, tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Cardinals await the winner of Williams and Ursinus.
