WASHINGTON – For the second-straight season and the 18th time since 1992, the Catholic University of America men's basketball team is CUA Holiday Inn College Park Classic Champions. The Cardinals took on a game Williams College squad on Wednesday night inside the DuFour Center and outlasted the Ephs for the 65-57 win.
Tournament MVP Jay Howard led the way for head coach Steve Howes and company, with game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (seven). Howard shot 7-of-12 from the field and knocked down seven free throws while adding two assists a block and a steal.
The Ephs led early in the contest, 7-4, but a quick 7-0 run by the Cardinals gave CUA a lead they would not concede. Catholic led by as many as 15 in the second half, but Williams battled back to make it a one-point game with just 1:16 to play.
It was the MVP that came up with answer however as Howard scored down low on the next possession and started a 7-0 run to end the game for the Cards.
Along with Howard, senior point guard Bryson Fonville garnered All-Tournament Team honors as he pitched in 13 points, eight assists and two steal in 35 minutes of action.
Rookie guard Andre Mitchell was strong for the second-straight game, scoring 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Mitchell also registered six rebounds, two assists and a 3-pointer.
Both teams shot over 40-percent from the field and knocked down five 3-pointers, but CUA was able to get to the free throw line eight more times than Williams while turning the ball over just eight times.
Catholic also assisted on 17-of-23 made field goals.
The Cardinals will take a quick break for New Year's before heading North to the Merchant Marine Academy in Landmark Conference action on Saturday, January 2 at 2 p.m.
