King's Point, N.Y. - The Catholic University of America men's basketball team got 27 points from its All-American Bryson Fonville on Saturday afternoon on Long Island, but it was not enough as the Merchant Marine Academy edged the Cardinals, 87-84.
Fonville was locked in, shooting 10-of-12 from the field but five USMMA players scored in double digits to trump CUA.
Sophomore Jay Howard scored 18 points and junior Corey Stanford added 14 points and seven rebounds, but the hit-shooting of Merchant Marine was too much to overcome as it knocked down 10 3-pointers in the game.
The game featured 15 lead changes and 13 ties.
The Cardinals led 84-79 with less than three minutes to play, but USMMA scored the final eight points to come away with the win.
CUA continues Landmark action on Tuesday back inside the DuFour Center against Elizabethtown.
