WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America men's basketball team continued its undefeated start to the season, winning its fifth-straight as the Cardinals downed DeSales, 81-56. Sophomore Jimmy Golaszewski came off the bench for a career-high 21 points and six rebounds to lead the charge.
Golaszewski was locked in from his first check into the game and finished 7-of-12 from the field with three 3-pointers, an assist and two steals. He was one of three Cardinals in double figures as the team shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field.
DeSales came out and built an immediate 8-1 lead and continued to lead by seven, 14-7, before Catholic caught fire and used a 19-2 run to take control for good.
The Cardinals took a seven-point lead, 39-31, into the break and despite a Bulldogs' rally at the start the second which made it 41-40, the Cards remained poised and used another big swing to put the game away.
Catholic scored 14-straight points from the one-point advantage and used an 18-3 run over seven and a half minutes to ice the game.
Junior forward Jay Howard played just seven minutes in the first half after he picked up two fouls early, but came back with 18 points in the second half to go over 20 points for the second-straight game and third time this season. He finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shots and 8-of-9 attempts from the free throw line.
The Catholic defense was also on display with 13 steals as it forced DeSales into 23 turnovers. The Cardinals aheld the Bulldogs to 2-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half.
Sophomore guard Andre Mitchell played a strong game both on and off the ball. He totaled 10 points, a 3-pointer, four assists and four steals in 37 minutes of action.
The Cards continue a tough stretch of three games in five days as they travel to St. Vincent's this Wednesday at 5 p.m.
