WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America men's basketball team will play its first regular season Division I opponent in three years when they head to the University of Maryland for a DMV showdown on December 12, at the Xfinity Center.
The Cardinals and Terrapins have faced each other before as the two teams squared off in an exhibition to start the 2013-14 season. This will be the first regular season contest between the two teams in Catholic's Division III era.
"It is a thrill and an honor to be able to play Maryland in the regular season," said head coach Steve Howes. "To be able to play one of the best teams in the country in one of the best venues is a remarkable experience for our basketball family and the Catholic University community."
Coach Howes and the Cards have made the NCAA Tournament in three of the past five seasons. Catholic looks to capture another Landmark Conference Championship behind All-American candidate Jay Howard along with four returning starters and 19 letterwinners. Howes also tied the program record for wins last season as he captured his 251st victory for the Cardinals.
The addition of Maryland to the team's regular season schedule gives the Cardinals a chance to compete against its first-ever "Power 5" conference team in a regular season game as they prepare for their third Landmark title in six years.
"Coach Turgeon is one the best coaches in the country and their program's storied tradition is something I grew up watching as a fan," remarked Howes.
The Cardinals and Terps have actually faced off in 22 regular season games, dating back to 1910, before Catholic made the transition to DIII. Maryland owns a slight edge in the series, 12-10, with all but one game before 1945. The two teams last squared off in 1979.
Catholic is no stranger to playing big-time Division I programs as the Cardinals have played Notre Dame (twice), Florida and George Washington, as well as Maryland, in the past seven years.
Additionally, the Cardinals played at the alma mater of NBA sensation Stephen Curry, Davidson College, to open the 2014 season, in Catholic's last Division I regular season game.
This is the first game announced for Catholic's 2017-18 schedule. Check back on CUAcardinals.com next week for the full slate and in the coming months for ticket information as it becomes available.
