Fredericksburg, Md. — The Catholic University of America men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season as they downed Hood, 100-82, at the Blazers' Rotary Tip-Off. Senior forward Jay Howard powered the Cardinals with 32 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. With the win, head coach Steve Howes becomes the program's all-time wins leader with 252 victories
The Catholic offense exploded in the first half with 50 points and built a 12-point advantage at the break. The Cards were able to replicate the performance in the second with 50 more to reach triple-digit points.
The Cardinals shot over 50-percent from the floor as a team as well as 11-of-21 3-pointers. Catholic was also able to out-rebound Hood, 48-33, and pulled down 19 offensive boards.
The offense was truly rolling as the Cards assisted on 21 baskets with 47 bench points.
Howard, who was selected to the all-tournament team, was one of three players in double-figure scoring and was joined by sophomore Ross Gerber (18 points) and senior Billy Barnes (10 points). Gerber and Barnes combined for five triples while Barnes rounded out his career-best performance with five assists and three rebounds.
Howard set Hood Rotary Tip-Off Classic records for field goals made in a game (130), tournament (25) and helped Catholic to the most points scored (100) and averaged (89.0) in the tournament's history.
