Host of Cardinals receive All-CAC honors
WASHINGTON - Pat Maloney (Brant Beach, N.J./Southern Regional) has been named first-team All-Capital Athletic Conference for the second consecutive season, and Coach Mike Lonergan (Bowie, Md.) was named CAC co-Coach of the Year.
Forward Will Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel High) was honored as CAC Rookie of the Year and sophomore center Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) garnered second-team All-CAC accolades.
Maloney, a senior four-year starter at point guard, leads the Cardinals in scoring (14.9 ppg) and assists (4.7 apg), and is just the eighth player in school history to surpass 1,500 career points. He needs 10 points to move to No. 6 all-time. He was named CAC Rookie of the Year in 1997-98 and second-team All-CAC as a sophomore.
Lonergan received Coach of the Year honors for the third time in the past four years, this time sharing it with Rod Wood of Mary Washington. Lonergan guided the Cardinals (22-5) to their third CAC Tournament championship last week. His .698 winning percentage (171-74) is tops in school history. For the fourth consecutive season CUA has won 22 or more games, captured the CAC regular season title and appeared in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Cards will host CCNY in the first round of the NCAA playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Morley, who hit the game-winning shot in CUA's 61-59 victory over Marymount for the CAC crown on Feb. 24, is averaging 10.1 points and 4.0 rebounds. His .495 (91 of 184) shooting percentage is second on the team, while his .842 free throw percentage leads the CAC.
Hilleary paces the CAC in blocks per game (2.4), and his .516 field goal percentage (133 of 258) tops the team. He leads the club in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and is second in scoring (12.0). He has recorded five double-doubles (points, rebounds) this season and produced a career-high six blocks against York (Pa.) on Feb. 22.
