Cardinals named ECAC Team of the Year
WASHINGTON - Catholic University has been selected as the ECAC Division III Men's Basketball Team of the Year. The Cardinals were 28-5 this past season and captured the NCAA Division III national championship with a 76-62 victory against William Paterson on March 17.
Coach Mike Lonergan, who became CUA's all-time winningest coach in the title game, was named NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and DIII News. He was also honored as Coach of the Year in the Middle Atlantic Region for a second time, and by the Capital Athletic Conference for a third time. A lifelong resident of Bowie, Md., Lonergan's .705 winning percentage (177-74) is the highest in school history.
Senior point guard Pat Maloney was named second-team All-American by D3hoops.com and was recognized as Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
The Cardinals captured the first team national championship in school history and punctuated the campaign with a 16-game winning streak. They jumped from No. 14 to No. 1 in the final D3hoops.com poll.
