Catholic defeats Wheaton in Pepsi Classic final
WASHINGTON - Pat Maloney scored 18 points and Matt Hilleary 16 to lead No. 8 Catholic University to a 79-72 victory against Wheaton (Mass.) to win the CUA Pepsi Classic at DuFour Center on Sunday, Jan. 7.
Andy Rice added seven points, six assists and a career-high 12 rebounds for the Cardinals, who improved to 9-3. Robert Delaleu scored a game-high 22 points for Wheaton (5-4) and Luke Gordon 21.
In the consolation game, Brian Williams tallied 22 points and six rebounds to guide Curry College (4-8) to an 81-70 victory over Delaware Valley College (4-6). Jameel Hawthorne paced the Aggies with 19 points and Tyree Jones had 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Hilleary, who totaled 35 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks and was named tournament MVP, hit one of two free throws with 1:26 left to boost the Catholic lead to 74-68. After a short jumper by Ryan Connor cut it to 74-70, the Cardinals' Will Morley hit a pair of free throws with 44 seconds to push the Catholic lead back to 76-70. Morley finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
