Cardinals host Globetrotters;
hoist Championship banner
WASHINGTON - Catholic raised its 2001 NCAA National Championship
Banner to highlight its exhibition contest against the world famous
Harlem Globetrotters in a standing-room only DuFour Center. The CUA
fans were wowed by the Globetrotters as they came away with a 90-46
win Monday night. The Trotters had four players score in double
figures and Keiron Shine, a former standout for Memphis University,
who led the Globetrotters with 19 points. Box
score
Junior Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School)
was up to the challenge of the Globetrotters as he notched 19
points on 9-for-17 shooting. Hilleary banged around down in the
paint with the likes of former NBA players Oliver Miller, a 6-9
forward, and Doug Smith, a 6-10 power forward. Hilleary was the
only Cardinal to finish in double figures as Catholic played its
entire bench. Sophomore Will Morley (Olney, Md./Good
Counsel) did manage to grab 11 rebounds but had trouble
finding the basket as he was just 1-of-7 from the floor.
Junior Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame NJ) was 4-for-8 for nine points, while freshman Bobby Henning (at right), all 5-7 of him, played well, scoring eight points and dishing out five assists.
Prior to the game, Catholic unveiled its National Championship banner with a ceremony featuring members of last year's senior class. Andy Rice and Kurt Zeisler did the honors of revealing the banner and received a standing ovation from the sellout crowd.
Will Morley, despite his shooting woes, had a most memorable experience. "It was exciting playing some of these guys we've watched since we were kids," said Morley. "I'll remember this forever."
Catholic resumes its 2001-02 schedule on Sunday, Nov. 25, with a non-league game with Scranton at the DuFour Center at 7 p.m.
