Feb. 21, 2002

WASHINGTON - Catholic went on a 15-3 run midway through the second half to open up a 66-51 lead and cruised to a 77-61 win against Goucher in CAC Tournament semifinal action at the Raymond A. DuFour Center.

The Cardinals, the top seed in the tournament and ranked No. 3 in Division III, improve to 24-2 and will face Marymount University, 103-100 winners at York (Pa.) in the night's other semifinal game.

Junior center Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) scored 10 of his 19 points during the decisive run to lead six Cardinals in double figures. Junior guard Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame [N.J.]) provided the exclamation point with a 3-pointer with 5:33 left in the game. Wise finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Catholic jumped out to a 21-9 lead in the first 10 minutes, 36 seconds of the game before the No. 4 seed Gophers (13-13) went on a 9-2 run, sparked by a jumper and a 3-pointer from Curtis McNeill. The junior guard finished the night with just seven points on 3-for-13 shooting. Goucher was led by Thabo Letsebe, who came off the bench to score 16 points and grab a team-high six rebounds.

William Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and Bobby Henning added 11 points, while Craig Avallone and Blair Mills scored 10 apiece to round out the Cardinals in double figures.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday in the Capital Athletic Conference championship game against Marymount at 4 p.m. The winner of that game, a rematch of last year's title game, receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
