WASHINGTON - Catholic breezed to an 86-67 win against Goucher in a CAC contest Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center. Sophomore Will Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) collected his first double double of the season, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He was one of four Cardinals to score in double digits. Teammate Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) came close to notching his own double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds as Catholic won its third game in a row. After Morley's layup to make the score 13-10, Catholic raced out to a 12-3 run to increase their lead. The Gophers' Trevor Quinn (13 points) sank one of two free throws to put Goucher within 10 points at 28-18. Catholic kept a 10-point cushion for the rest of the half and went into the locker room at half with a 39-28 lead.
Catholic (3-1, 2-0 CAC) turned up the pressure in the second half by outscoring Goucher 20-8 early on to increase their lead. The Cardinals would lead by as much as 30 in the second half. Catholic's starting five of Morley, Hilleary, juniors Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame [N.J.]), and Craig Avallone (Lincroft, N.J./CBA), and freshman Bobby Henning (Bricktown, N.J./East Brunswick) all finished with 10 or more points. Wise and Henning both scored 11 points respectively while Avallone netted 14 points.
Junior Chris Altenburger (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and sophomore Blair Mills (Hebron, Md./Wicomico) were impressive off the bench for Catholic. Altenburger finished with two points, three rebounds, four steals, and a block while Mills had three points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Catholic shot 26-for-54 (48.1%) from the floor while connecting on 30-of-35 chances from the line. Goucher (3-2, 1-1 CAC) had trouble at the charity stripe, making only 17 of 38 attempts.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday with a non-league game at Villa Julie at 7 :30 p.m.
