ARLINGTON, Va. - Catholic had its 20-game winning streak come to end at the hands of Marymount as the Saints held off the Cardinals 79-70 in a CAC game. After scoring just three points in the first half, junior Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. The Saints' Terry Hoffman led all scorers with 21 points. It was the first conference loss for Catholic since Jan. 24, 2001, versus St. Mary's.

The Cardinals trailed for most of the first half but stayed within striking distance on the shooting of Craig Avallone (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Brothers Acad.). The junior (above) scored 10 of his 16 points in the first period. With Marymount leading 30-26 right before the break, the Saints' Devin Archie and Hoffman connected to field goals in the last minute to send the teams into the locker room at 34-26.

The second half saw Catholic climb back from deficits as great as 12 points and take its first lead of the game on sophomore Blair Mills' (Hebron, Md./Wicomico) two free throws to make it 64-63 with just under five minutes to play.

After trading baskets, the Saints' Archie used a baseline jumper followed by a 3-pointer to give Marymount (16-7, 9-3 CAC) a three-point lead with 2:09 remaining. Archie finished with 16 points. On the next Saints possession, Hoffman sank one of his three 3-pointers to give Marymount a 73-68 lead and seal the upset.

Catholic (20-2, 11-1) received nine points from junior Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame [N.J.]) and nine points and nine rebounds from sophomore William Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel). Freshman Bobby Henning (Bricktown, N.J./East Brunswick) chipped in eight points and three assists before leaving the game late with an injury.

As a team, CUA shot 25-for-65 (38.5%) while Marymount was 29-for-60 (48.3%). Each team was 11-for-13 from the free throw line.
